I just finished reading this book – all in one sitting because I simply couldn't stop once I got started (it really is that gripping and engrossing), and my only two complaints are as follows: first, I wish it were possible to give this book a whole lot more than only five stars because it definitely is the best in the series – though I find myself saying that with each subsequent book – I can't help it, the quality of these books just keeps getting better and better and better with each new release. Hats off to phenomenally talented author Carolyn Q Hunter! And the second thing is that it will be really difficult waiting until the ninth book is released, because I'm dying to know what adventures Sonja will find herself in next… If this new release is any indication of adventures yet to come in this awesome series, then I intend to remain a loyal reader for many, many, many more years to come… This is definitely a totally winning series and an absolutely awesome and amazing new book. Once you get started reading, you won't be able to put the thing down… I guarantee it… It's paranormal culinary cozy mystery at its absolute undeniable best… An absolute "must read" for all fans of the genre, the series, or anybody up for a spooky and creepy and totally gripping murder mystery that will totally captivate you from beginning to end without any graphic violence, foul language, sexual content, nor anything else that could potentially offend certain readers – it doesn't need any of those things because the book is beyond excellent in and of itself. I can't praise this book or its author enough or recommend it highly enough to express how thoroughly much I enjoyed reading it… And I guarantee that you will as well…

Birthday Cake Waffle Book 8 in the Diner of the Dead Series edition by Carolyn Q Hunter Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down and was honestly a bit surprised by how fast I read it. The mystery was fairly obvious, but there was an underlying creepiness that kept me interested even though I knew what would happen. My only complaint is that I wish there was some more information about Sonja's dad or the person who seems to have some sort of vendetta against her.
Frank has planned a romantic weekend getaway for Sonja that goes downhill fast. Sonja's shadowy enemy has sent her another relic that gives her the power to leave her body and interact with her ghostly visions. This time the relic is a necklace that is Frank's birthday gift to Sonja. At the remote and snowy resort they visit, Sonja knows she has witnessed a murder but she and Frank can't prove it. Resorting to using the relic's power to leave her body, Sonja sets out to prove that murder has been done and find the murderer. Another wonderful adventure into the paranormal world that Sonja sees. No cozy or paranormal fan should overlook this series of ghosts, twisted murder plots and characters that you grow to love!
I am already a big fan of this series but this book is great! Sonja is no stranger to murder or waffles but things just keep happening and it seems as if someone has plans for her. The book has a supernatural twist that is creative and the gifts make each new murder unique as well as Sonja's abilities grow. I especially like how the setting changes but she can always have waffles involved. The regular returning characters are always colorful but this book doesn't really include them other than Sonja and Frank but the new characters are extremely well described and developed. The story is interesting and unique. This book like previous ones in the series is leading up to a bigger picture a little at a time and I am always anxious to see the next development not to mention where her relationship with Frank is going. This book may not be my favorite in the series but it's close and just as creepy.
Frank plans a romantic weekend away with Sonja in order to celebrate her birthday and share secret with her. Before leaving he searches the town high and low to find the perfect gift for her to open. After happening upon a new antique store he purchases an old necklace and sets off to pick up Sonja.
Sonja's mother is unhappy that she will not be able to celebrate Sonja's birthday with her. When Frank arrives he asks her to first open his gift. Immediately Sonja recognizes the wrapping as that which covered the enchanted object she found in her home.

Immediately Sonja recognizes the wrapping as that which covered the enchanted object she found in her home only a few weeks before. After a brief delay, Sonja and Frank are off for the cabin. The drive is peaceful and the only hiccup is almost running out of gas. They meet some interesting characters on their trip. The only thing missing is a murder. It isn't long before the pair find themselves fighting for life.
This series has become a bit more dark in the last two books. The character development remains thorough and the action moves at a steady pace. I am not a fan of horror, and I worry the series may be moving that way. However, it could just be my own sensitivities.
